Understanding Demons Through Gratitude
We all face internal battles—moments when we’re drawn away from our values and pulled toward our most vulnerable tendencies. Even those of us who live with gratitude aren’t immune. The concept of “demons” lingers across time and faith traditions, as metaphors for temptation, distraction, and inner struggle.
Jesus Himself faced demons. In the desert, they came to Him at a moment of deep vulnerability, offering power and control. Yet He resisted. In many ways, this mirrors our own spiritual journey. Temptation often arrives quietly and unannounced, shaping itself around our weakest points.
But what if, rather than fearing or resenting these challenges, we saw them as opportunities for transformation? Gratitude may feel unnatural in the face of temptation, but it becomes the fulcrum upon which growth pivots.
What Are Demons?
Demons are not always external forces. More often, they are fixations—attachments to the earthly, the indulgent, and the ego-driven. They manifest as cravings for money, excessive desires, narcissism, material obsession, and compulsive behaviours. These forces anchor us to our earth-bound identity and distance us from our spiritual self.
A person tethered to the demonic finds freedom elusive. The soul becomes encased in earthly wants, numbing the deeper call of spiritual awareness. Temptation doesn’t always roar—it whispers, deceives, and convinces. Even Jesus was offered the world. Demons always aim to sever us from clarity, convincing us that what we crave is what we need.
Demons in Disguise
Demons are subtle. They rarely appear with horns and fire—they appear as seductive thoughts, as justification for destructive choices, and as comforting illusions. They manipulate logic and twist conviction. Left unchecked, they rob us of self-control and separate us from what we know is right.
But demons are also familiar. Just as an addict remains in lifelong recovery, our personal demons never truly disappear. We evolve in how we face them, but they persist at the edges, waiting for our guard to lower.
The Role of Gratitude
The real power lies in surrender—not defeat, but spiritual openness. When we give thanks even in our struggle, we invite grace. I’ve found that true strength emerges when I face hardship with gratitude. It’s not a passive gesture. It’s a spiritual stance.
Through my Catholic upbringing, I remember priests speaking of divine grace as the armor against affliction. Alone, we are vulnerable. But with spiritual guidance, we are protected. Through prayer, reflection, and trust, demons lose their grip.
Recognize, Name, Surrender
To begin healing, we must first name our demons. See them plainly. Know that they will not vanish—but they can be overcome. They are earthly by nature, and earthly by limitation. Your eternal self holds greater strength.
These forces claim power only when fed. When our spiritual self awakens, the veil lifts, and we begin to understand how earthly attachments diminish our freedom. Churches speak of demons as entities; I speak of them as attachments—earthly addictions that masquerade as necessity. Individuals live their lives masquerading their life styles and life choices under the influence of their earthly bind. They fail to see the masquerading in themselves but more readily accuse others of masquerades. The results speak for themselves. When there are rifts in families and self destruction, more likely than not, the masquerading that others do has this predictable end. And when political leaders masquerade about their love of fellow countryman yet at the expense of so many, the deception of masquerade can show the link to an earthly bind that shows the power of demonic forces. This fixation to ego driven indulgence into one’s overall importance is demonic by nature and serves no benefit to nurturing love, respect and our spiritual reality. And when we recognise our own indulgences and ego driven desires, we have a chance to distant ourselves from our actions, to take stock of our lives and to shine light where light needs to be shone. It is only through this awakening and the embracing of gratitude that we can begin to loosen the grip that demons have on us.
Final Reflection
Identify the demons in your life. Call them out. Know they will not disappear on their own. Spiritual guidance is reaching for you—accept it. Trust it. Even in failure, your awakened self will seek divine protection. Demons have purpose—they reveal what must be faced.
Jesus’s temptation was no accident. It was a profound test, and a lesson. And just as He was guided through it, so too are we. Gratitude becomes your shield. Grace, your compass. Trust that every trial—even one rooted in darkness—can guide you to light.
In conclusion, see demons for what they truly are. They exist to derail our future and obstruct our pathway to enlightenment. They operate by cloaking temptation in justification, distorting our perception of truth. We see this not only in our personal lives but also on the broader stage of politics—where leaders may claim to act in the people’s best interest, while reality tells a different story.
Demons are fixations on earthly indulgence. You might spot them more easily in others than in yourself. Many remain unaware of how deeply they’ve been drawn into deception—ignorance becomes fertile ground for the demonic to thrive. This lack of awareness is its strength, nurturing a quiet descent into spiritual stagnation.
So move forward with resolve. Recognize and confront the fixations that stand in the way of spiritual maturity. Choose the high ground. Know that the spiritual realm is ever ready to support you. There is always hope. Always grace. Offer gratitude not just for the moments of clarity, but even for the struggle itself—because struggle is the doorway to awakening. This struggle will not be won on the first encounter. Demons have had years to inflict their hold on us. Our fixations on habits and behaviours have develop over years and taken their hold on us without us realising the implications. So be gentle on yourself in dealing with them. Know that the bind they have takes time to break. Failure is always a step to success. Know that you are being guided throughout every effort and that spiritual assistance is always there to illuminate the darkness whatever happens. A light that shines over the darkness will eventually dispel the demons. Faith and hope are critical ingredients on your quest. And love is the force that will shower you with self respect and guidance and assure you that you are love, cared for and guided.
You are on a path that, with guidance and intention, will illuminate the darkness and keep your demons at the fringe.
